Q&A

Do you have any questions?

A few of of the most questions about oral hygiene and answered.

A beautiful smile showing white teeth can boost your confidence. Most people experience some discolouration of teeth over the years, either from surface or extrinsic stains or internal discolouration. For teeth that are yellow or gray, we recommend teeth bleaching. For intrinsic discolouration, we recommend veneers. Veneers will provide a permanent solution.

Dental health varies from person to person, but we recommend that adult patients visit the dentist once a year, even if your mouth is in perfect condition. This ensure that any problems are identified early.
Having your teeth cleaned should be more often – 4 monthly for adults and children. Children under the age of 12 should visit the dentist twice a year. Decay is far more rampant in children than in adults.
All patients must engage in daily flossing and brushing.
To take your oral hygiene to the next level, you can follow these steps:
– Use products that contain fluoride.
– Limit snacks that are high in sugar or carbohydrates.
– Eat a balanced diet of fruit and vegetables.
– Smoking is detrimental to your oral health.

Your dentist takes a full set of dental X-rays early into the doctor-patient relationship. This helps to examine and record your mouth’s hidden areas for issues that need treatment and comparing against changes that occur between appointments.

The best way to ensure a healthy mouth is to follow a balanced diet and visit the dentist regularly – whilst maintaining your oral care routine twice a day. Conditions such as diabetes or HIV/AIDS can also affect your dental health, as well as medications and certain types of chemotherapy. Protect yourself against problems that can advance quickly by discussing these dental issues with your practitioner.

Patients with tooth sensitivity feel pain when they consume food that is hot, cold, sweet or acidic. This comes from grinding your teeth in your sleep or following a very acidic diet. In some patients, this may be the result of receding gums or tooth grinding during sleep. Your dentist will examine the affected teeth and recommend treatment to reduce your sensitivity. Sensitivity can also be caused by the wrong brushing technique.

Most adult patients are good candidates for implants because they can help to prevent the remaining teeth from moving. Implants are permanent and serve as a good alternative to fitting a bridge for anyone with an otherwise healthy mouth and jaw. Implant placement is a simple procedure, if your bone is favourable. We now move in an era where implant success is 95 %. The success of implants has a history of 30 years.

Cosmetic mouthwashes do  not prevent bacterial growth. A mouthwash with chlorhexidine is the best but, continuous use will stain your teeth and tongue. Any mouthwash with fluoride is beneficial.  Therapeutic rinses can also assist in treating conditions such as gingivitis and inflammation caused by chemotherapy.

Children should start going to the dentist at the age of two as children can develop cavities from as early as two years of age.
